One of the topics that has been in my mind to discuss is the many "aphorisms" that are so often quoted in regard to the sharemarket ("no one ever went broke selling at a profit", "buy in May and go away").
Roger Montgomery has beat me to it and has made a bit of a start on discussing this over here. I reckon it's a good read.

ReplyDeleteIt isnt really an aphorism, or by definition an eponym.. but Quantiferon is now part of the medical lingo...
Increasingly at medical meetings when they list all of the tests performed, you see Quantiferon used synonymously with Tuberculosis test.
The presenter lists full blood count, liver function tests, urea and electrolytes, blood sugar level, other tests that have been done and then Quantiferon in with the list. No explanation is needed to say test for Tb as it is known !
That is acceptance ....

Very nice Skorpian.
ReplyDeleteMy Mother always did the "Hoovering".
I was at the GP the other day and talking about chest infections and that chest x-rays were quite hard to read and see "damage". My father had had TB. It was the '60s and he'd very recently, about a month prior, had the regulation chest x-ray and been given the all-clear. He then developed a stomach ulcer and was coughing blood. As part of the hospitalisation, he was x-rayed more comprehensively, from a variety of angles and they then picked up the TB. He was subsequently treated and spent 6-8 months at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital as it was covered by repat because it couldn't be determined when the TB infection actually occurred and so it was assumed that it may have been during his WW2 service. Anyway, I then casually asked the GP if he'd heard about "Quantiferon" as it seemed then to be on-topic and he said "Oh, yes, that's been around for quite a while" he then went on to add that as part of "The Travel Doctor Network" it was a useful test, and that they used it for people traveling overseas, firstly before they left, usually getting a negative and upon return to check if they'd had any exposure en route. PS, I miss your insights on SS Skorpion and I think the whole issue with you and was a lot of BS. I hope he's "Chilled" out by now!
